Tips for when you first start teaching.
At High Yoga School, we are passionate about guiding our students to find their authentic voice as teachers. As we gear up for our upcoming training course this autumn, commencing on September 8th, 2023, we want to share some insights and tips for anyone who has just graduated and is just starting out as a yoga teacher.
As an additional resource, we highly recommend our peer Katie Oriel’s 1:1 mentorship program. For more information, please visit www.katieorielyoga.co.uk.
1. Embrace Teaching from the Outset
Teaching yoga is akin to exercising a muscle; it requires regular practice to maintain strength and flexibility. As soon as you commence your training, look for opportunities to start teaching - be it in local studios, renting your own venue, or even online. The more you teach, the more refined your instruction will become, and the better you will be able to navigate the varying dynamics of different classes.
2. Prioritise Your Personal Practice
One common pitfall for many newly certified instructors is forgetting their personal yoga practice. As you dive into teaching multiple classes per week, ensure you still carve out time for your own growth and rejuvenation. Whether it's through meditation, chanting, prayer, breath-work or asana, it's crucial to keep your personal practice alive. After all, you can only pour from a cup that's full.
3. Integrate Your Learning Before Pursuing Additional Courses
After earning your initial certification, it may be tempting to jump straight into another course. However, it's important to remember that learning is as much about assimilation as it is about accumulation. Take time to integrate, embody, and share the knowledge you've gained from your training. This thoughtful process will enable you to bring a richer, more authentic experience to your classes.
4. Plan Your Classes with Care
While seasoned instructors may seem to effortlessly guide their classes, it's essential to note that class planning is a critical component of effective teaching. It takes time and experience to develop the ability to 'read' a room and adapt your techniques accordingly. Before each class, take the time to plan your sequence, practice it in your body, and then share your magic with your students.
5. Embrace the Value of Your Work
In the realm of yoga, many new teachers may hesitate to monetise their skills, but remember, it's OK to make money. Your work has value, and it's perfectly acceptable to charge accordingly. Be proud of your professional journey and don't shy away from acknowledging the monetary worth of the invaluable service you provide.
6. Stay Relaxed and Trust Yourself
As a new teacher, it's normal to feel some jitters. Remember, you are enough just as you are. Trust in your training, show up as your authentic self, and don't forget to have fun! The joy you find in teaching will be contagious to your students, and this authenticity will make your classes a beloved space for all.
We hope these tips inspire and help. Remember, we have one spot left for our Autumn 2023 course, which starts September 8th – if you are looking to begin your journey — seize this opportunity to embark on a transformative journey with us and get in touch today.
